Shocks
in store for both Todd and Karen when faces from the past
arrive in Weatherfield. There's a shock in store for Todd
(Bruno Langley) when ex-lover Karl Foster (Chris Finch) turns
up on his doorstep. Karl initially gets a frosty reception
from Eileen (Sue Cleaver) but Todd, realising they have some
unfinished business between them, invites him in to talk.
Karl expresses his sadness at the death of Todd's son, Billy
and goes on to explain that he is proud of Todd for the way
he dealt with his new found sexuality. There is a charged
moment between the pair but Todd pulls away before they kiss.
Having cleared the air, they both decide to go for a drink
in the Rovers. Once inside the pub, they meet with a barrage
of crude remarks from a homophobic Les (Bruce Jones). Karl
wants to leave, but Todd is tired of running away and hiding
from people. He makes a stand and invites the Rovers
regulars to back him up as he challenges Les's narrow-minded
viewpoint. Will the residents of the street help Todd find
the acceptance he so badly craves?
Meanwhile,
Steve (Simon Gregson) and Karen (Suranne Jones) head off on
a shopping spree. Steve attempts to curb Karen's spending
when they agree to buy each other just one surprise gift.
The trip is a resounding success and Steve is over the moon
when he takes delivery of a new wide screen television. Karen
is equally pleased when Steve presents her with new sexy underwear
and a jewellery gift set. The loved-up pair settle down for
a romantic evening in but are disturbed by a knock at the
door. Steve hurries downstairs in order to get rid of the
unwanted caller. Both are stunned to find a face from Karen's
distant past standing on their doorstep.
Elsewhere,
the Rovers bowls team are gearing up for the forthcoming
final against the Slaughterman's Arms. They are in a confident
mood although they know they face strong competition. Jack
(Bill Tarmey) gathers his troops in the Rovers for a pep talk
but is interrupted by a stranger who reveals herself to be
Edie Bagshawe, captain of the opposition team. Edie stuns
the Rovers into silence when she announces that she knows
Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh) is a transsexual and is therefore
disqualified from the competition. A devastated Hayley flees
the pub in tears and it's left up to Roy (David Neilson) to
console her. With their star player now out of the equation,
it looks like it's disaster for Jack's team.
Also,
Mike (Johnny Briggs) is furious to discover that Penny (Pauline
Fleming) has gone against his advice and invested in Ciaran's
(Keith Duffy) restaurant business.
